Craig Hansen

Founder & CEO

Craig Hansen founded The Hansen Company in 1979 and since that time the company has established itself as a strong, reputable contractor that consistently ranks in the Top 10 of General Contractors in Central Iowa as ranked by annual revenue in the Des Moines Business Record’s Book of Lists publication.  As the company has grown so has Craig’s presence and influence in the construction industry.  Over the years he has been very involved with Master Builders of Iowa (or MBI) which represents the construction industry in every facet.  For his extensive service, MBI recognized Craig’s contributions to the industry by honoring him with the prestigious Build Iowa Award in 2017.

Through MBI, he has served in multiple roles and positions including serving on the Board of Directors as the Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President (respectively).  He also served on various MBI committees including Government Affairs (Chairman), Industry Relations, Scholarship & Academic Advisory, Fiscal Affairs, Rebuild Iowa Coalition, Project Delivery Systems, Convention & Travel as well as the Promotion & Marketing Committee (Chairman).

In addition to his dedication to shaping the construction industry at a state level; Craig has also influenced the industry at a national level through his service and participation with the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).  Craig served on the National AGC Board through various committees including Quality in Construction, Project Delivery Systems and the Construction Marketing Committee.

Craig personally and professionally exemplifies the merits and qualities of a leader both within the construction industry and throughout the broader community.  Craig was the leading force for The Hansen Company when the Principal River Walk was initially developed in downtown Des Moines.  In honor of his commitment to the project, the Hansen Triangle Park was created and still exists today.  He also encourages his team to get involved and because of that leadership approach, many Hansen Company personnel hold memberships, board positions and other levels of leadership in various community organizations.

In 2006 Craig decided to venture beyond general contracting.  Along with his son Troy Hansen they formed Hansen Real Estate Services to compliment the construction company with a full service real estate development company.  The firm has achieved tremendous success in a short amount of time having developed over a million square feet of real estate including the following projects:

  • Ballyard Lofts, Des Moines, IA
  • Bella Strada, Johnston, IA
  • City Square, Des Moines, IA
  • Eagle View Lofts & Townhomes, Des Moines, IA
  • El Adobe Apartments, Tempe, AZ
  • Fountain View Village, Fountain View, AZ
  • Johnston Town Center, Johnston, IA
  • Lake View Town Homes at Fox Valley, Aurora, IL
  • Oxford Row, Des Moines, IA
  • The Hansen Company Office Complex, Johnston, IA
  • Village Place, Des Moines, IA

Whether its construction or real estate development, Craig is committed to quality.  Never one to follow the crowd he looks for unique opportunities to develop projects which have meaning and add value to the community.  If “anyone can do it”, it’s not something Craig is interested in doing.  Considering the time and resources required to develop unique and intricate projects; Craig prefers to focus on projects that will stand the test of time.  In doing so, Craig works alongside his wife Myra.  Together they have developed, planned and provided interior design for countless projects.

On the home front Craig has two grown children and when he’s not hanging out with the grandkids he enjoys collecting and driving a myriad of classic, high performance and very fast cars.  So the next time you spy a really cool, eye-catching car driving down the road, take a closer look.  It just might be Craig behind the wheel!
